Prescription Sunglasses

Filed under: Prescription Sunglasses — admin @ 10:34 am

Question;
What are Prescription Sunglasses ?

Answer;
Put simple Prescription Sunglasses are your normal prescription glasses that have had the lenses treated in some fashion to darken those lenses to protect you eyes from the bright sunshine.

Question
Can I have my prescription glasses tinted ?

Answer.
Absolutely . Tinting of reading glasses, distance glasses and Multi Focal and Bi Focal glasses are a standard option and you see them everywhere without even knowing it

Question:
Can I have Trendy Wrap Around Prescription SunGlasses;

Answer
In General, No. The major obstacle in making wrap around Prescription Sunglasses is in fact the curve of the lens. Without going into great technical detail, the Prescription Lens is shaped to bend the incoming light to suit your eyes requirements [more info]. It in not possible to accurately reproduce this in the entire wrap around lens. Some manufacturers try to overcome this problem by having a “clip-in” Lens that fits inside the wrap around glasses. These can be effective but some people still have trouble adjusting to the two layers of lens, the inner and the outer.

Question
Are the tints different shades of darkness.

Answer.
Yes, certainly. Tints come in three (3) different grades of darkness. The lightest tine is only 15% with the next a little darker at 45%. Sunglasses tint is generally rated at 80% blockout. Quite dark and meant for outside usage.

Question.
You say tinted “Reading” Glasses. Why would I tint reading Glasses ?

Answer.
The glasses you buy from AusSpecs, although of excellent quality, are so inexpensive that many people have a pair of reading glasses specifically to sit in the sun reading their favorite book. This is much better for the health of your eyes than the reflected sunlight from a bright white page of a book.

Question.
Should I tint my distance prescription glasses ?

Answer.
That depends on what you want them for. Many of our AusSpecs Clients choose to have 2 pair of distance glasses. One for driving and one for watching TV etc. Again, with the cost so low this is affordable for virtually all people.

Questions.
What about night driving in my prescription sunglasses?

Answer.
Some people do but this is by no means recommended. Those that do generally have their glasses tinted to a 15% tint

Question;
What is Solid Tint and Graduated Tint, what is the difference ?

Answer:
A solid tint is such that the lens is tinted from top to bottom with the same density of tint. Graduated Tint refers to the fact that the Density of the tint, be it 15%,45% or 80%, starts at the nominated density at the top of the lens and graduates to a very light or clear tint at the bottom of the lens. This can have a stunning effect especially on larger frames and fashion frames. Do not confuse Graduated Lenses (tinted) with Progressive Lenses. Progressive lenses are basically Multi Focal Lenses by another name.

Question :
Are the lenses that change colour good as sunglasses ?

Answer ;
No matter the type of tinting each has its place but the photochromic lenses that change colour with the sun are about the most popular.

Question;
What colours can the lenses be tinted to.?

Answer:
Basically every colour of the rainbow. Depending on the material your glasses are made from, the range is wide and varied. At AusSpecs we have on offer 27 different coloured lenses ranging from Dark Greens through orange, pinks and greys.

Question:
What are the lenses made of ?

Answer:
Today the vast majority of lenses are made of a plastic material known as CR39 although quickly becoming very popular are the lenses made for Polycarbonate. Although the Poly lenses can be made photochromic the option of standard tinting is not so easy. In this case the molecular structure of the polycarbonate is tightly bound together thus making adhesion of a tinted layer very difficult.

Question.
What is the difference between Transitional and Photochromic ?

Answer.
Realistically Nothing. The term transitional is loosely used to describe the changing of something from one state to another. In the case of sunglasses it describes the tarnsition of the colour of the lenses from one colour or other to clear. Photochromic Lenses do exactly the same thing in that they change from one colour to clear. Photochromic Lenses change colour proportionate to the UV rays available at the time.

One brand of Photochromic lenses is the brand name “Transitions” which is the fiercely protected trade name of the Transitions Lens company

Question;
Are Photochromic Prescription lenses expensive.

Answer :
Yes they cost more than normal tinted lenses but they are not expensive when buying through AusSpecs

Question;
Do they protect me against Ultra Violet Light

Answer;
The UV rating on all glasses is usually 99% or even better so realistically the Sunglasses part protects the health of your eyes against glare rather that UV. In saying that though, always check the UV Rating of the glasses you are buying and ensure maximum protection.

Question;
Can I have Polarized Prescription Sunglasses ?

Answer;
Again, most definitely. In our Australian Coastal lifestyle Polarized lenses have become very popular and are a standard option on the AusSpecs WebSite.

AusSpecs Feb 2011 Newsletter

Hello from AusSpecs

2011 – Newsletter

Well the New Year is well under way and we just wanted to say hello, thank you for your support in the past years (since 2006… time flys!) plus bring you up to date with what is happening and what has happened in the past year.

The Strong Aussie Dollar : This is a huge bonus considering that virtually all optical frames sold in Australia are imported from overseas (mostly China) so with the dollar at parity we are really happy to pass on the savings to our clients.

Current Specials : We know you are busy and may not wish to read all of this newsletter so here are the current specials in case this is of interest.

**** Current Super Special ****

Free Sunglasses Lens Tinting… Saves You…. $14.95

Reading or Distance glasses (Many Frames) ONLY $38.00

2 Pair for ONLY $67.95*

Multi Focals or Bi Focals for ONLY $127.00*

2 Pair Multi Focals for ONLY $245.95*

* Means with a standard prescription

* Finishes 1 March 2011

It has all happened in 2010

  • The Federal Government and the Health Funds : The Federal Government recently issued an directive to the Health Funds not to pay benefits to their members for treatment or medical aids (including Glasses) procured overseas or on the internet from Companies not based in Australia. AusSpecs is an Australian based company and not affected by this rule. In fact we are now Registered Optical Providers to nearly all of the Major Health Funds. The vast majority of sites and even those that desperately try to pretend to be Australian will fall foul of this new law
  • Special News : As we mentioned in our last newsletter The Sydney NSW Facility is operational and things are running smoothly. Glasses from this facility can be identified on the AusSpecs Website by the AusSpecs Logo on the images of the glasses.
  • 500 frames and colours: We now have over 500 frames and different colours to choose from and are working on introducing more fashionable Plastic range of frames in the generic brand soon.
  • AusSpecs Brand and Generic Brand. This is a little confusing but basically it only means the AusSpecs Brand are from the Australian Operation and the generic brand are from our Hong Kong Facility.
  • Client Feedback : We have had some wonderful feedback from you which is fantastic. This feedback is so important to us as it tells us that we are on (or off) track plus it lets the skeptics know that AusSpecs can be a trusted supplier of your next pair of prescription Glasses.
  • Prices Drop : As mentioned above, Aussie Dollar is now one for one which means great savings for Australians right now (Great time for a holiday !). Because we buy in bulk and pay in US Dollars we can pass on the huge savings to you so now is the time to cash in. It is still our stated goal to be the cheapest in Australia and at the same time have the best quality glasses around.
  • Website Total Revamp ; Well we have done it again… a few times. They say that it is bad to keep changing the appearance of your website but we are continually evolving and trying to make things as easy and attractive as possible. I think we are on the right track but I have to say it is good that we make quality prescription glasses for a living and not websites !. By the way, the model on the front page of the site is Janets (the owner) Granddaughter, Shelby.
  • Save and Recover : We are trying a new feature that you might find useful. Throughout the website (In the top menus) there is a thing called Save on the left side and Recover on the right. Basically this facility just saves what you put into your shopping cart for 5 days. Although it does not save any personal details (better that way) at least you can take time in choosing frames etc, save them and then come back later. Just remember to write down the recovery number and if you empty the cart at any stage you need to save it again.
  • The Industry : What a remarkable couple of years it has been in the spectacle industry. Since we kicked off in 2006 you, as we have, would have seen the retail price of glasses drop like a stone. So much so that even those not buying online from Ausspecs are still seeing real savings. Makes you wonder about the massive overcharging in the past !

From the Boss :

Hello
Wow what a year its been and how fast it has gone.

I would like to pass on my sincere thanks to you for your  support  over the past year(s) and hope that we can continue to assist in saving you  huge amounts of money when it comes to buying prescription spectacles for years to come.

We started this website in 2006 in the hope of making glasses affordable to everybody and not just the well off.

Four plus years down the track I think we have not only achieved this but have also played a small part in shaking up the industry for the better.

We could not have done this without your support

Thank you.

Our best wishes to you and yours and we look forward to being of service again soon!
